Large Spalted Sycamore Bowl

on Dec 27, 2011 | Bowls | 0 comments

I was able to get a considerable amount of sycamore wood back in October.  I rough turned a number of bowls from it and have a few more to rough turn while the wood is green.  I started one bowl back in early December and let it sit for a couple weeks and then final turned it.  It is still a little green, and I have no doubt that the wood will move some even yet, but it has turned out fairly nicely.

The bowl is over 15 inches in diameter and about 5 1/2 inches high.

I turned through the bottom of the bowl while I was finish turning it.  When I was making the last few passes for the final turning I got a little deep, then while finishing the bottom I had a catch.  While I was cleaning up the catch I turned through the bottom.  I turned a filler plug from a contrasting exotic wood.

So far the bowl has a coat of food-safe walnut oil on it. The intention is to give it to my step-son for his birthday gift.

Here are some pictures.  I know I have a picture or two of me holding the bowl before it was final turned. I may add them later.
